George Atwood was a tutor at Trinity College who created a pulley-wheel arrangement used to demonstrate Newton's First and Second Laws. He created twelve experiments to go with this apparatus.

Force is any kind of push or pull influencing an object's movement. Because it affects motion, force can be described using velocity and acceleration. Newton's second law says, "Acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and is inversely proportional to its mass. The direction of the acceleration is in the direction of the net force acting on the object." As an equation is a=ΣF/m which can be written as ΣF=ma.
